For 78 years, Minnesota’s Governor’s Fishing Opener has celebrated something bigger than fishing itself, our state’s deep connection to the outdoors and the traditions that bring Minnesotans together across generations.
“The Governor’s Fishing Opener celebrates the incredible fishing opportunities in Minnesota as well as the unique communities and outdoor experiences that make our state a top travel destination,” Lauren Bennett McGinty, executive director of Explore Minnesota, said. “Stillwater offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, vibrant downtown charm, and rich history, all set against the stunning backdrop of the St. Croix River. We’re thrilled to work with local partners to showcase the area’s tourism appeal and kick off the summer season in a place that truly embodies the spirit of Minnesota hospitality and recreation.”
In 2026, that tradition is coming to Stillwater for the very first time. Being selected to host the Governor’s Fishing Opener is a competitive bid process. Hosting the event is both an honor and a responsibility, and it would not be possible without the incredible collaboration behind the scenes.
This event is truly a partnership effort between Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Explore Minnesota, the Governor’s Office, the City of Stillwater, and Discover Stillwater, all working together to highlight the natural resources, outdoor recreation, tourism industry, and the economic impact these experiences create.

“Discover Stillwater is incredibly excited to welcome the 2026 Governor’s Fishing Opener to Stillwater,” Stillwater Discover President and CEO Kelly Nygaard said. “This event is a celebration of Minnesota’s fishing tradition, and an opportunity to introduce visitors to the charm and history that make Stillwater such a special place. We’re proud to partner with Explore Minnesota, the DNR and the state of Minnesota to highlight recreation on the St. Croix River. It’s an honor to host, and we can’t wait to showcase our river town.”
At its heart, the Governor’s Fishing Opener is about celebrating Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, fisheries, and outdoor heritage. Guests and media from around the state and region will have the opportunity to get out on the water, fish with local boat hosts, and experience firsthand why the St. Croix River is a treasured natural resource.
Stillwater is a beautiful and historic town, and I am excited to bring the Governor’s Fishing Opener to the banks of the St. Croix River,” Gov. Walz said in his August 2025 announcement. “This event provides an opportunity to celebrate what makes Minnesota special and bring Minnesotans together to experience our exceptional fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities.”
But the weekend is about more than fishing. Visitors will also experience the charm and hospitality that make Stillwater a destination year-round, from trolley rides, to discovering local shops and attractions, and sweet stops along the popular Treats Trail. Discover Stillwater wants every guest to leave with a deeper appreciation for Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley.

Over the past year, a dedicated planning committee has worked to bring this event to life. We’re also deeply grateful to the volunteers and boat hosts donating their time, energy, expertise, and equipment to make the experience unforgettable for guests and media alike. Their willingness to step up reflects the generosity and pride that define this community.
And of course, our sponsors are helping make this entire event possible. Sponsor support plays a critical role in bringing the Governor’s Fishing Opener to life in Stillwater.
Chuck Dougherty, owner of Water Street Inn, said “I think it is a great opportunity to showcase our community as a fishing and boating location.”
The Minnesota Fishing Opener has long served as a reminder that Minnesota’s outdoors belong to everyone. It’s a bipartisan tradition rooted in conservation, recreation, tourism, and state pride, one that brings together leaders, communities, industry partners, anglers, and visitors.
In 2026, Stillwater is proud to be part of that story for the very first time. We can’t wait to reel in a fun week on the St. Croix!
